Belgium is often regarded as one of the most misunderstood yet equally fascinating countries in Europe. It is relatively small but densely populated with a team of historic cities – notably Brussels, Antwerp and Bruges – that see this little country pack a hefty punch, particularly in the employment stakes. As home to an increasing number of multi-national businesses and EU institutions, Belgium’s population of 11.3 million speak a range of languages, making this one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan and appealing places to work for foreign nationals. While it isn’t necessary to be able to speak French, Dutch or German (the three official languages), doing so would certainly be an added bonus on your CV. Most Belgians work in the tertiary sector, such as legal, banking, media and tourism. However, despite having one of the highest minimum wages in Europe and a buoyant economy, Belgium has an ongoing need to recruit workers from outside the country to help it tackle the skills shortages it faces across a number of key sectors. In particular demand are electrical and mechanical engineers, technicians, nurses and midwives, support services, IT staff, accountancy and finance professionals, teachers and construction workers.
